Who killed Adeline?

I had discussed with my class about the story of Adeline Ng Ai Choo. A story about a girl who committed suicide due to her low grade has cause quite an impact to our class. There has been argument about whose fault was it which cause Adeline to face such distress and to an extent of committing suicide. Well, we still have not really reach a conclusion.

To me, the one who killed Adeline is her parents. They are the one who had indirectly killed Adeline. High expectations and comparisons has led adeline to depression and therefore cannot focus on her work. However, the parents did not notice it and add on to her pressure. I think that it is fine to compare the results of their daughter to others. However, they should not compare it infront of their child as the child might not be able to take it. The child may stress herself up to study harder to satisfy the parents as the result.

Next, the parent has also neglected that Adeline may not be able to relieve her stress and made some remarks which demoralize her. "I will die if you do not get a good grade" is one of the remarks made by the mother. They should try to inderstand the child's plight and encourage her. Knowing the child's standard and setting the right goal is also important. However, they did not, which cause Adeline's death.

We should not blame the teacher or principal as it is the right thing to be firm and strict about the marking system. If they were lenient and gave the one mark to Adeline, pupils may mistaken and ask for more marks and it will never be like an exam anymore.

EDUCATION! What is that?

Hi guys! I had just read a book from "Little Ironies". I had a few point of view of one of the short stories in it. "Adeline Ng Ai Choo" was the story I was about to discuss. It is about a girl committing suicide due to the fact that her subject teacher refused to give her an extra mark for her year end exam.
I was filled with opinions after reading the story. I also started to question myself what exactly is education. Well, allow mw to explain. Education is a system for everyone regardless of age, races, or religion. Everyone need education to survive these days. Education is actually everywhere. It is what teachers or trainer teach everyone(usually as a kid) and nurture them into an outstanding figure in the society. Education trains and educate us to design, give knowledge and develop potentials. We can develop our character and mental power through education. However, education does not help only in an instance, instead, it helps us in the long term when we get into the society. We can also instill correct moral values and culture into ourselves for disciplinary purposes. We can learn to upgrade ourself, through education, not for the sake of pleasing our parents or teacher, but for our future.
